Robert Powell: Leaf House Welcome
Robert Powell grew up in Canada, but is based in Great Britain. For a long period he was the director of the cultural development organisation Beam in Wakefield. As a poet and journalist he has collaborated with visual artists, musicians and performance artists and published several collections of poems. For the Leaf House he wrote a welcome poem on the front door, that can only be read through the mirror across the door in the hallway.
I am Leaf.
I unfurl, flag-fly, spin sun
into breath, come
adrift to sail, return.
The world hangs from me.
I am House —
a beached boat of needs. Rain
takes my shape, I melt snow, fold
love & pain inside
to become home.
I am Leaf House —
root house, sky house.
Enter me, be
safe & wander, dream.
The artist’s eye is all our I’s.
